I met Clockwork Zero at Ad Astra’s panel on Steampunk fashion. While I don’t believe steampunk is the future of aestehtics, I do believe it is an important next stage.
We’re watching the peak of mass production. There’s nowhere to go but down. Luckily, the tools of both production and distribution are cheap and getting cheaper all the time. This means a return to the handcrafted. These objects reached their peak during the Victorian era. For a while they lived side by side with the factories.
So steampunk is important. We have to start where we stopped. Unfortunately, the panelists at Ad Astra thought the movement basically consisted of spray painting things copper. Luckily, one of the people in the crowd thought differently.
Clockwork Zero makes steampunk jewlery. She has an art opening at Ben Navaee Gallery on 1111 Queen Street East this Saturday April 5 and the show will continue through the week. You can see more of her work here and here.
I’m even thinking about commissioning some cufflinks.
